Carlos Jaime Barrios awarded HDR for groundbreaking contributions to sustainable advanced computing

On June 6th, Dr. Carlos Jaime Barrios Hernández was officially awarded the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) — a prestigious academic distinction within the French-German academic system, and increasingly recognized across Europe. The HDR represents the highest level of academic qualification for research leadership, typically pursued 7 to 15 years after the completion of a doctoral degree, and is a prerequisite for attaining senior academic ranks such as full professorships.

Dr. Barrios successfully defended his HDR dissertation titled: “Hybrid Multiscale-HPC Architectures: Advancing the Computational Continuum Towards Sustainable Advanced Computing”.  This achievement highlights his prominent role in the global high-performance computing (HPC) community and his innovative work in shaping sustainable digital infrastructure.

His research addresses key challenges in the evolution of the computational continuum — integrating multiscale models, hybrid architectures, and energy-aware HPC strategies to support scientific innovation while reducing environmental impact.

This recognition not only marks a major milestone in Dr. Barrios’ academic career but also underscores Latin America and the Caribbean’s growing contribution to the global HPC landscape.

The Advanced Computing System for Latin America and the Caribbean (SCALAC) extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Carlos Jaime Barrios for this outstanding accomplishment, which strengthens our region’s leadership in advanced and sustainable computing.
