SCALAC Strengthens Regional Cooperation During CARLA 2025 in Jamaica

The Latin American Conference on High Performance Computing (CARLA 2025), held in Kingston, Jamaica, brought together the international community of advanced computing, artificial intelligence, and data science, reaffirming its role as the main meeting point for researchers, academics, institutions, and industry representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean.

During the event, the Advanced Computing System for Latin America and the Caribbean (SCALAC) held its General Assembly, a key moment to review strategic progress, reinforce regional collaboration, and define the next steps to advance the development of the HPC and AI ecosystem across the region.

Recognizing Excellence and Scientific Contribution

As part of the CARLA 2025 program, SCALAC presented two of its highest distinctions to individuals whose careers have significantly contributed to the consolidation of the advanced computing community in Latin America:

Philippe Navaux Award
Presented to Dr. Andrei Tchernykh, in recognition of his exceptional mentorship and support for students and early-career researchers in advanced computing throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. With more than five decades of contributions, Dr. Tchernykh has been a key figure in fostering talent and building scientific collaboration networks.

Mateo Valero Award
Presented to Dr. Florencio Utreras, for his outstanding contribution to the creation and strengthening of research communities and digital infrastructure for advanced computing across the region. His visionary leadership has been essential to advancing international cooperation and academic connectivity in Latin America.

A Shared Commitment to the Future

The participation of the SCALAC Executive Committee reaffirmed the organization’s shared commitment to strengthening cooperation, fostering talent development, and ensuring the sustainability of the regional ecosystem for supercomputing and data science.

The committee included:
Philippe Navaux (President of SCALAC), Carlos Jaime Barrios, Nicolás Wolovick, Esteban Hernández, Esteban Meneses, Carla Osthoff, Esteban Mocskos, Antonio Tadeu, Claudio Chacón, Harold Castro, Robison Rivas, and Ginés Guerrero — leaders representing institutions across Latin America who have been instrumental in advancing HPC collaboration and capacity building in the region.

CARLA 2025 proved once again to be a platform that drives new alliances, shares experiences, and promotes collaborative policies aimed at positioning Latin America as a key player in open science, technological innovation, and global sustainable development.

SCALAC continues to work towards strengthening the region’s scientific and technological capabilities, promoting a cooperative model built on infrastructure, talent, and a shared vision for the future.
