SCALAC strengthens its regional presence at the InPEx Workshop 2026 held in Niterói, Brazil

From April 22 to 25, 2026, the InPEx Workshop 2026 was held in Niterói, Brazil, bringing together high-level specialists in high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and advanced scientific research ecosystems.

The event convened experts from Japan, the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the United States to discuss the main challenges and opportunities of the post-exascale era, including the convergence of HPC, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing, scientific software management, the digital continuum, experimentation with large AI models for science, and international efforts to develop strategic roadmaps.

In this context, several members linked to SCALAC had an outstanding participation, representing both their institutions and the Latin American and Caribbean advanced computing ecosystem. Their presence contributed to positioning the region’s capabilities, priorities, and perspectives within international discussions on the future of scientific computing.

Among the notable contributions was that of Philippe Navaux, President of SCALAC and researcher at UFRGS, who was part of the workshop organization and participated in strategic discussions on the convergence of HPC and artificial intelligence. He also took part in the presentation “Advanced Computing R+D+i Statement in LAC”, together with Carlos Jaime Barrios Hernández, addressing the importance of strengthening research, development, and innovation in advanced computing across Latin America and the Caribbean.

For her part, Carla Osthoff, from the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing in Brazil, participated in the session dedicated to regional strategies around the convergence of HPC, AI, and quantum computing, with a presentation on the Brazilian Program in Artificial Intelligence, providing a key perspective on the development of national and regional capacities in advanced technologies.

The agenda also included the participation of Carlos Jaime Barrios Hernández, affiliated with SCALAC, INRIA, and UIS, who contributed to sessions related to the computing continuum and the advanced computing research ecosystem in Latin America and the Caribbean. His contribution helped highlight the challenges of integrating infrastructures, data, services, and scientific communities across the region.

Likewise, the participation of specialists such as Isidoro Gilter, from ABACUS-CINVESTAV-IPN; Antonio Tadeu Gomes, from LNCC; and Nicolas Wolovick, from the National University of Córdoba and Chair of the CARLA 2026 Conference, strengthened the Latin American presence in key discussions on international roadmapping, GenAI and software engineering, as well as experimentation with large AI models for science. These are strategic topics for the future of scientific software, technological sovereignty, and the responsible adoption of generative artificial intelligence in HPC environments.

The participation of SCALAC members in the InPEx Workshop 2026 represents a significant step forward in connecting Latin America and the Caribbean with global advanced computing initiatives. These spaces make it possible to strengthen international collaboration, share regional experiences, identify cooperation opportunities, and contribute to the development of strategic agendas for next-generation scientific infrastructures.

The workshop received support from Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, SCALAC, RNP, SBC, UFRGS, the Universidade Federal Fluminense, and the French NumPEx program, among other institutions, reflecting the relevance of international cooperation in advancing scientific and technological research in the post-exascale era.

Through its participation in this event, SCALAC reaffirms its commitment to promoting the development of advanced computing in Latin America and the Caribbean, fostering collaboration among supercomputing centers, academic networks, research institutions, and scientific communities to strengthen technological sovereignty, innovation, and the social impact of science in the region.
