Hamburg, Germany, June 23, 2026. Members of the SCALAC community participated in ISC High Performance 2026, one of the leading international conferences for the global high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and advanced computing communities, held in Germany.
As part of the HPC Around the World initiative, the session “HPC Around the World: Africa, Latin America & Middle East” brought together speakers from different regions to share insights into the development of HPC and Artificial Intelligence capabilities, strategic use cases, and regional perspectives.
The session highlighted current HPC capabilities in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as their applications in areas such as mining, oil and gas, bioinformatics, astronomy, and other strategic sectors. It also addressed the presence and positioning of these regions in the TOP500 list.
Latin America was represented by distinguished members of the regional HPC community, including:
Carla Osthoff, from the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing, Brazil, with the presentation “HPC & AI Research in Brazil”.
Nicolás Wolovick, from UNC Supercómputo, FAMAF-UNC, with the presentation “HPC & AI in Argentina”.
Isidoro Gitler, from CINVESTAV, Mexico, with the presentation “HPC and AI in Mexico: New Perspectives and Recent Advances”.
Through their participation, they shared a regional perspective on the current state of high-performance computing, its growing connection with artificial intelligence, and the main challenges and opportunities for strengthening scientific infrastructure, talent development, institutional collaboration, and technological sovereignty in Latin America.
The participation of SCALAC members in ISC 2026 reaffirms the importance of increasing the visibility of advanced computing in Latin America and the Caribbean within global forums. It also strengthens opportunities for international collaboration and contributes to the global discussion on the future of HPC, AI, and digital infrastructure for science.
With this presence, SCALAC continues to promote regional and international dialogue, capacity building, community engagement, and the development of the advanced computing ecosystem in Latin America and the Caribbean.
